Let’s talk thrifty
By Judi on Aug 19, 2009 in being thrifty
We are on a savings plan. Though this week it may be hard to tell that. We are saving for a trip to Disney when Army husband and son come home in December.
Now let’s be clear here, it takes a lot of mola to get a family of 7 possibly 9 to Disney. Extra numbers come from Army son’s girlfriend and goddaughter’s boyfriend. So we are saving lots and lots of pennies.
I used to be picked on. I can feed this family on $50 a week. Many people said I couldn’t do it. Well I really can. With only 4 of us home now it is even easier. So I am going back to that method. I really want the kids to have fun at Disney, so….
Tips on being thrifty when it comes to the grocery bill. Somewhere I have an article I did. I will have to look it up. Until then let me tell you the one tip that has always helped me the most ….
Cook from scratch. Now I know hamburger helper may be a convenient food. It may be easy to just pour a can into a pan and heat it up.
Nutrition wise it is horrible. I can’t stress that enough. And to be honest when priced out, it really isn’t cheaper.
Yes it takes more time to cook from scratch, but it is really worth it. You don’t have to be a gourmet cook either. Trust me, I am far from that!
You can start with the simple stuff. Try pancakes. Remember from scratch not the mixes or bisquick. You can find a recipe in your Betty Crocker Cookbook. If you give me a bit I may even put up my recipe for cinnamin oatmeal pancakes.
Pancakes are just penny a serving. If you make enough you can put them in the freezer or fridge. Kids can pop them in the toaster for a quick breakfast. See? Two meals with one effort!
To be able to cook from scratch you do need to have a pantry filled with the essentials. Things like flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, oatmeal, cinnamin, etc. May have to cover that in a future blog too. While this may be an intial investment it is well worth it.
Your family will love you and your wallet! Trust me!
